During the 1960s and 1970s AT&T built many underground coaxial buildings. These "hardened" buildings were designed to withstand the effects of a nuclear blast. They were equipped with blast doors, air filters, radiation protection, generators, sleeping accommodations, a kitchen, food and water and medical supplies for those manning the facility. This ensured that those working in the site could do so during and after an attack. Because these facilities are underground the median temperature is approximately 55 degrees F year round. Companies desiring to use these facilities for their servers and routers will appreciate the energy savings associated with this cool environment.
These sites are strategically placed within an hours drive of major metro cities. This allows the conveniences that a large city provides and the anonymity that a remote location has.
